Every significant journey often starts with a defining moment. For me, that moment came at the age of 13 during a summer spent in the stunning landscapes of Alaska. My father, a leader in the hardwood flooring industry, received a call from our client, Buck. He needed help installing wood floors, and this trip planted the seeds of my future in the family business—hardwood flooring.

The Invitation to Alaska

Buck was more than just a client; he was an extraordinary host who recognized an opportunity with my father and me. He generously covered our airline tickets and even shipped our tools and machines to ensure we had everything we needed. The excitement of flying to Alaska ignited my youthful spirit, and I couldn’t wait to stay in a cabin nestled among towering mountains and lush forests.

Upon arrival, I was awed by Alaska’s natural beauty. Towering trees lined the roads, and the fresh, invigorating air felt like a breath of life. Buck welcomed us with open arms, perfectly embodying the Alaskan spirit of hospitality. This was not just a trip; it felt like the beginning of an adventure I had only read about in books.

A Work Ethic Rooted in Experience

The days were spent immersed in hard work. My father taught me the ropes of hardwood flooring installation, emphasizing the importance of precision and integrity in every plank we laid down. He once said that “each board should be a reflection of your character.” Watching him work was captivating; his hands moved with a grace and skill that demonstrated his lifelong dedication. I quickly learned to appreciate quality over quantity.

In between installations, Buck shared stories about Alaska's rich history, echoing the significance of our work. He reminded us that flooring is not merely about laying down boards but about creating homes where families live and memories are made. Each project we completed felt like a continuation of a legacy that would be passed down through generations.

A Fishing Adventure

One of the unforgettable highlights of our trip was Buck's invitation to join him on a charter boat for a day of fishing. The anticipation was palpable as we set out into the vast, shimmering waters. With hopes of catching fish, I was eager for the action of the day ahead.

The thrill peaked when I felt a strong tug on my rod, signaling a bite. I struggled to reel in a colossal halibut, and its sheer weight nearly pulled me off the boat. Sensing my struggle, my father took over, showcasing his strength and determination. We battled against that impressive halibut for over an hour, a testament to our teamwork. In the end, we triumphantly hoisted a 300-pound fish aboard, a trophy of our efforts. That evening, we celebrated our catch with a feast that tasted like victory, sharing stories with Buck that would last a lifetime.

Lessons Learned

That summer in Alaska taught me invaluable lessons about hard work, camaraderie, and respect for nature. I returned home enriched with skills and memories that shaped my character and future choices.

As I continued to grow, my experiences in Alaska deepened my passion for wood flooring. I stepped into the role of a second-generation hardwood installer, understanding every nuance of the craft. Each project I undertook was a canvas painted with the skills and values my father instilled in me—appreciating quality, being transparent in our work, and shouldering the responsibility of crafting homes.

Building My Own Legacy

Years later, those lessons transformed into the foundation of Local Guys Hardwood Flooring, born from that unforgettable summer in Alaska. Our mission is to carry forward the legacy of quality and craftsmanship while treating every home as though it were our own.

Today, I lead my team with the same principles I learned from my father and Buck. We are committed to excellence, hard work, and treating clients like family. Each flooring project serves as a reminder of that summer, affirming that our work extends beyond floorboards; it’s about creating spaces that feel like home.

Reflecting on My Journey

Thinking back to that summer in Alaska brings a smile to my face. The mix of hard work, adventure, and friendship set me on the path to building a lasting legacy in hardwood flooring.

As I continue navigating this industry, I cherish the values and skills I developed during that transformative experience. The journey from a curious 13-year-old boy to a proud business owner has been remarkable. My passion for hardwood flooring is stronger than ever. Here’s to future generations of woodworkers, fishermen, and dreamers who will discover the beauty and joy in the connections we create through our work, just as I did in Alaska.
